It’s probably not surprising to hear that less-stressed leaders make better leaders.
Stress is so normal in our culture that we rarely see the costs of living the same stress patterns over and over. However, workplace stress has a very high cost. It often is the root cause for higher turnover rates, lower levels of service to customers and patients, and very often affects a company’s ability to grow.
A few years ago I focused my coaching work on helping people dismantle their personal and professional stress patterns. I love this work and I know I am making a difference in the lives of the clients that I serve. In the last 6 months, I’ve been seeing the need to create a leadership program that further helps leaders who are moving beyond a life of stress. This was where the idea of Altruistic Leadership Training was born.
Let’s first look at the definition of altruism. Altruism means showing a selfless concern for the well-being of others; being unselfish. This means that we are leading with wisdom and genuine concern for others. When these perspectives are infused with the powerful action of serving other people, we start to create altruistic leadership patterns.
When we are stressed, we are not able to put the needs of others or our company above our own. This means that we routinely serve ourselves first. This mentality leads to all sorts of problems in workplaces and relationships. These stress patterns overtime will create a toxic workplace for others.
When we have done the work to shift away from stress, we in fact not only take better care of ourselves, but we also get the opportunity to change the lives of other people. This trickle-down effect then benefits the company. Overtime, altruistic leadership patterns will naturally transform a company and take it to greater heights.
As with any big change, altruism starts small and then snowballs into transformation overtime. This can happen when one leader decides they are going to operate with altruism, and learns the skills to do so. It can also happen when a company decides it’s going to introduce the idea of selfless service to its employees.
Here at Endless Ocean Coaching, we are dedicating our mission to not only lowering stress levels, but also helping leaders shift into lives of selfless service to others. Our first step is with the development of Altruistic Leadership Training. When we lead from a place of selfless service, this custom-built workshop becomes a doorway to possibilities.
